The history of the glass bead Naga rupee coin necklace

It is a stunning fact that this necklace is in pristine condition for being over 100 years old. A glass bead, 51 multi-strand style of necklace of this quality was most likely worn by a woman of wealth. This masterpiece was created c.1900 during a time that Northeast India and Myanmar were colonized by the British.

The Naga loved color and handcrafted all the art they produced. They were known for textiles and this is apparent in the incredible fine cotton thread macramé that is a woven clasp with a British colonial rupee as the button.

The mastery in the craftsmanship is breathtaking. Every bead is placed meticulously into a necklace that lies on your neck perfectly.  It drapes like fabric. It is at this moment, a clear recognition of the genius of the Naga design is perceived within every strand.
